Food writer Maggie Marrion is just getting back on her feet after a horrible year, or two, or three. With their twentieth reunion approaching, she invites four of her closest friends from college for a weekend at her beach cabin. What she doesn’t expect is her best friends, artist Quinn Dayton and part-time erotica novelist, Selah Elmore, to play matchmaker. The two plot a surprise that will make the weekend, and her life, a lot more interesting.

Gil Morrow, former grunge musician turned history professor, joins them as Selah’s date for the weekend. After coming face to face with the one who got away, he decides he’s waited long enough to get the girl. With the support of old friends, a few wishing rocks, the world’s largest burrowing clam, and a hot lumberjack thrown into the mix, Gil reminds Maggie that forty-something isn’t too old for second chances.

Can we learn to love the life we have and let go of who we expected to be? What happens when the generation from The Breakfast Club and Reality Bites meets The Big Chill? Come spend a weekend with these Generation X-ers as they share laughter, tears, life’s ups and downs, old stories, and new beginnings.

MICHELLE’S REVIEW

Ok I had no idea what a geoduck was but the author explains it in the very beginning so I started reading. When they started talking about how phallic they were, I took my happy ass to google for some pictures and these things really do look like a penis!!!

So with that out of the way, I really enjoyed this book. It was not your typical romance in the fact that rather than dealing with 20 somethings, you were dealing with 40-somethings which ended up being a nice change of pace for me.

Our main character is Maggie and her college friends come for a visit. Her best friends Quinn and Selah decide to play matchmaker and bring Gil to the weekend party. Gil was very much a part of their group and still friends with everyone- except for Maggie who broke his heart. Of course Maggie never forgot him either.

The story travels through all the ups and downs of the friends lives- young love and lust. divorce, marriage, babies and life in general. In many ways they are so adult that it’s refreshing.

But that doesn’t last long. Eventually Gil breaks Maggie down and they start to explore a second chance at love. I fell in love with Gil. He seems like a total catch in every way. Maggie starts to get on my nerves. She continually gets in her own way. She’s her own worst enemy and sometimes I want to slap her and just be like:
Gil was so good for her and she kept getting in her own way! He was just so swoon worthy and since a 40 year old man is totally age appropriate I was totally into the hot professor. I was like:

I love Selah and Quinn. This is a book where the supporting characters are as important as the main ones and I really enjoyed that. They were hilarious and sassy and ridiculous and I loved them because they always kept it real.
The story was a little slow to start for me. I wanted to see Maggie and Gil start their journey and I also really wanted to know more about their past but I started to feel like I was waiting forever to get there. However, it was worth the wiat because I really enjoyed the story. I also felt the ending was riushed a bit and I could have used an epilogue.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was nice to be reminded, as I round into my 30′s and still find myself single, that love can happen at any age and be just as sweet and swoon worthy as it is in your 20′s!
