SYNOPSIS

The CONSEQUENCES SERIES READING COMPANIONS

Books #4 of the CONSEQUENCES Series - BEHIND HIS EYES – CONSEQUENCES is a reading companion, by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Aleatha Romig, recommended to be read after completing all of the CONSEQUENCES SERIES: Consequences, Truth, and Convicted. It is not a standalone book and should not be read as such.

This companion was written to explore the thoughts and motivations of Anthony Rawlings, the man behind the consequences. It was not intended as a total rewrite of Consequences, but meant to enhance the reader’s understanding.

BHE-Consequences contains significant scenes from the novel Consequences, as experienced from Anthony’s point of view. It also contains never before read, behind the scenes information, as well as, a glossary of the characters and a timeline devoted to the events within Consequences.

BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES is a dark journey into the mind of the man who believes that he controls everything and controls nothing. Because there is more to learn about a man who:

Once upon a time, signed a napkin that he knew was a contract. As an esteemed businessman, he forgot one very important rule—he forgot to read the fine print. It wasn’t an acquisition to own another person as he’d previously assumed. It was an agreement to acquire a soul.

—Aleatha Romig CONVICTED

It was a long and painful acquisition—especially from Behind His Eyes!

MICHELLE’S REVIEW

Note to readers: You must read Consequences first. This a spoiler free review for Behind His Eyes- Consequences but it will make no sense to you if you have not read Consequences and there could potentially be spoilers for those that have not read Consequences.

Son. Of. A. Bitch. That was amazing. AMAZING. Aleatha Romig is most definitely an evil genius.

You have got to read this book. If you are a fan of the Consequences series, you NEED this book. I know there are plenty of people out there who are scared to get into Tony’s head because let’s be honest- it was scary enough looking at him through Claire’s eyes!!

For those of you that made it through the entire Consequences series, you were probably Team Tony by the end. So going back and having to relieve the first book where you were always so mad at him and questioning your feelings about him was not going to be easy. There were definitely moments where I found myself so mad at Tony because I had FINALLY come over to his team and I just wanted to be like:

And when we finally get to accident, I expected to be like this:

but Aleatha handled it perfectly. It was tough to get through but no harder for me than the first time.

I was actually surprised to find that even though I knew their entire story, seeing it from Tony’s eyes, I couldn’t believe or understand how Claire ever fell for him. It was like all the stuff that happened in Truth and Convicted didn’t even matter because we were back at square one and it was so fucked up!!!

I don’t want to spoil anything for those that haven’t read Truth or Consequences so what I will say is that my feelings for Catherine were more in line with how I felt about her in Convicted. When I read Consequences from Claire’s POV- I found Catherine to be a positive force. Seeing her from Tony’s eyes definitely showed me a different side that was more in line with how I viewed her later on in the series. Basically I felt more like this:

At the end of the day, here is what you need to know. This was a magnificently written companion novel. It’s interesting to see what scenes Aleatha chose to revisit but each one is as important as the next. It could not have been easy to get into a mind that was so twisted but Aleatha handles it like a pro. Will you need to drink heavily and pop a Xanax or 5? Yes. Yes you will. Will it be worth it? Absolutely. If I gave out stars I would give Aleatha about a million for this one. But since I don’t all I can do is this:

Bravo Mrs. Romig. Bravo.

ASK ALEATHA

Aleatha answers your burning questions!!

Was it difficult to write Tony’s POV?

It was! I tried to start this book multiple times. Each time I’d get so mad at him that I’d have to stop writing. (Don’t let that scare you) My anger was directed at his indifference more than his behavior. Then, one day I realized my problem. It was Claire. She’d lived in my head for almost three years. I knew what she experienced and how she felt. I couldn’t be Tony with Claire there. Once I realized that and evicted Claire (no exorcism was necessary—lol) I let Tony take over. From what I’ve heard…it was effective. You’ll have to let me know.

Is this just a rewrite of Consequences from Tony’s POV?

No. BEHIND HIS EYES CONSEQUENCES is NOT a rewrite. It is a “reading companion”. I went through CONSEQUENCES and with the help of my betas; we decided upon significant scenes that if told from Tony’s POV would enlighten readers. I also added “behind the scenes” scenes to again enlighten readers.

CONSEQUENCES was told mostly from Claire’s POV. Therefore, conversations and things happened outside of her observation. This companion allows readers to witness some of these scenes.

What if I don’t remember one or some of the scenes you chose for BEHIND HIS EYES?

I have included references at the beginning of each chapter to help you, if you want, to associate the scene Tony is experiencing with the scene in CONSEQUENCES, for example: Chapter 7 of BHE CONSEQUENCES is entitled: The Accident—September 2010, (Consequences—Chapter 19). That way, if you don’t remember the accident scene, you can go back and read it in Consequences. Honestly, it is kind of fun, perhaps not with that scene, to see how things and actions are perceived differently by the opposite POV.

What are your plans after you release all of the BEHIND HIS EYES reading companions?

I want to write a new series. I don’t know for sure if it will be two books or more. I want to develop a relationship with new characters and create new twists and turns. I have some notes and some ideas, but I’ll be honest, Anthony Rawlings is not an easy character to let go. However, I believe it is time.

I’ve been asked if I’ll ever write more about them. My answer is “I don’t know.” I can’t say NEVER, but I believe it is time to move on.

EXCERPT

“So, to what do I owe the honor of this visit?” she asked, minimizing her e-mail to be able to focus.

“Don’t throw me out of the office,” he said, trying to keep his voice light. “But I need to talk to you about Trent’s case.”

Laura leaned back in her chair, folding her arms over her chest, and started counting to ten.

“I know you’re having a hard time with him.”

Laura sucked on her top lip for a moment before answering. “I wouldn’t necessarily call filing for divorce a hard time.”

“And that’s what I need to talk to you about.”

“Patrick…”

“Just hear me out, okay?”

She ground her teeth but after a moment nodded.

“Listen, there’s no case against Trent. It’s weak at best. With the Article 32 about to start, we have a good chance of getting it stopped here before it goes to court-martial. But I need to plant doubt that the allegations against him are true.” He met her gaze. “I need you to do that.”

Laura chewed on her bottom lip, playing his words over and over in her head, not understanding what he was asking of her. “What do you mean, you need to plant doubt?”

“The primary witness against your husband, PFC Adorno—”

“Oh, we’ve met,” Laura said dryly.

Patrick’s smile was humorless. “Yes, well, that’s part of the prosecution’s problem. She’s alleging that Trent was inappropriate but the problem is that she and Lieutenant Randall were caught in their shenanigans downrange.”

Laura frowned. “So you think this is a ploy to get herself out of trouble?

“Her and her husband. If they were working together to steal the missing weapons systems, then what better way to get out of trouble than to make this stuff up against Trent? Takes the focus off her and her husband completely.”

Patrick leaned forward, tapping his index finger on the desk. “If I can cast Trent as a sympathetic family man who would never do anything like what she’s alleging, this case is all but dismissed. I’m not attacking her. All I have to do is make Trent look better than the story she’s telling and we’ve got a win.”

“And you need me to paint on a happy face and be the loving wife.”

Patrick shook his head. “No, I need you to be one half of a loving couple. And I need you to do it publicly where everyone can see it—in the PX, in the chow hall, everywhere. I need the officers on this board to believe exactly what I’ll be telling them on the day of the hearing.”

She looked down at her empty ring finger, absently rubbing the bare skin beneath the bandage. “Everyone knows that we’re having problems, Patrick.”

“Then make sure everyone knows you’ve fixed it.” He leaned back. “I wouldn’t ask you to do this if I didn’t think it was our best shot at getting this whole thing thrown out.”

She looked up at him. “Why didn’t Trent ask me to do this?”

Patrick swallowed and looked away. “He refused to drag you into this,” he said quietly. “For what it’s worth, I don’t in a million years believe the allegations against Trent. I don’t think he would ever, ever be unfaithful to you.”

Laura pressed her lips together in a flat line. “You’re wrong, Patrick. He’s been cheating on me for years. It was just with the army instead of another woman.”

“Laura—”

“Let me think about it,” she said quickly. “I won’t say no out of hand but I can’t make this decision on a whim.”

Patrick leaned across the desk, gripping her hand. “I know this is hard for you, Laura. I know what I’m asking you to do.”

She said nothing for a long moment and he gave her a sympathetic but firm smile.

“Give it some thought, okay?”

When she was alone, she sat there, staring at the picture of her family. Wondering how she was going to bring him back into the kids’ lives and then rip him out again. What he was asking wasn’t fair. He had no idea what this was going to do to her family.

She glanced at the photo on her desk as she typed furiously, trying to get ahead of the flood of e-mails in her inbox.

There was a quiet rap on her office door. “I’m not here,” she said quickly, looking up.

Her fingers froze on the keyboard. Her heart stopped in her chest.

Trent stood in the doorway. He had a duffle bag slung over his shoulder. His glasses hid the darkness of his eyes. There was a streak of dirt on his cheek. An assault pack hung limply from his left hand.

A thousand emotions ripped through her all at once, rioting for supremacy as she drank in the sight of her husband.

Ex-husband, she reminded herself. Or at least he was supposed to be.

She wished that this were a normal homecoming. One where she would rush across the small space and crash into him. His arms would come around her and she would inhale the strong spicy scent of his skin. Feel the heat of his touch. Savor that first, wild kiss.

Instead she had this. This empty chasm between them, echoing with loneliness.

And she had no idea how to cross it.

AUTHOR Q&A

1. You first introduced Trent and Laura a few years ago and readers have been eagerly awaiting their story for a few years. Did you always know when you first created them in BECAUSE OF YOU that this was how their story would play out?

I knew they would have a story to tell but telling their story in this particular way, no I didn’t intend it. It took finding my amazing editor along with multiple attempts at trial and error to get them just right. I’m a nervous wreck about their story, but I’m also really excited because I’m very happy with how their story turned out. Plus, hamsters. Who can argue with that, right?

2. BACK TO YOU is the incredibly emotional story of a marriage at the breaking point. What or who inspired you to write this story?

I remember standing in the ops one day and one of the guys was on the phone with his wife. He was telling her how much he was sorry, how much he didn’t want to work late. Then one of the other guys remarked that he always says that but he doesn’t ever mean it. So I had this idea of a man who was so driven to get back to war that he let his entire family and personal life suffer, but I also wanted a wife who people could relate to as well. Laura is Trent’s perfect complement.

3. In your own personal life, you’ve been the soldier that has deployed to a war zone and the spouse that stayed home and has taken care of the family on the home front. Which was more difficult for you in your experience? And why?

That’s a much bigger topic than we have time for but I’ll say this: each one has its own unique challenges. Being deployed, not being able to get home when your kids are crying that they want mommy, that’s brutal. It rips your soul out. But then coming home and your reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy? In some ways I think it’s worse, and that doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. As far as being the wife at home? I remember vividly lying awake at night, obsessively checking to make sure my ringer was turned on. I never cared when he called I just wanted to hear his voice. So which one is worse? I can’t really say. But I’m grateful that we’ve made it through each one a little bit stronger, you know?

4. Which is your favorite story to write—a reunion romances like Trent and Laura’s where each scene is alive with their own history or a fresh romance where they meet for the very first time and everything is new? Why?

I love a reunion story. I love the idea of being able to forgive and love the person you’re with right then and not the memory of someone. I’m a huge sucker for reunion stories, honestly. I love the reconnection, the noting of how things have changed, of learning to love that person all over again, especially after a betrayal or things didn’t work in the past.

5. Trent is such a compelling character and you do a beautiful job of showing his survivor’s guilt and the resulting anxiety and fear that provokes in him. He’s both so alpha and strong and so very broken. What inspired you to create such a complicated hero? A real life person? A culmination of your own experiences? What you’ve seen yourself in the army? And were you at all concerned about the way readers would respond to him?

Trent is going to be hard for people to read, I suspect. He comes close to crossing some boundaries, and I wanted to do that deliberately: I wanted people to understand that coming home from war isn’t cured in a day or a week. It’s a process. Someone like Trent who has bled in combat isn’t going to be okay after a night of magical sex. I know that’s the fantasy, but I wanted something more: I wanted the fantasy that the couple will be strong enough to make it. So for me, Trent is deeply, deeply personal because I’ve seen friends struggle with some very tough choices. And the truth is, there is no magical cure but there can still be a happily ever after if you have someone strong enough to stand with you.

6. Laura is such an amazing character because she’s done the best for her family at every turn and supported her husband. But when all communication breaks down with her husband and he just keeps deploying, she serves her husband with divorce papers while he’s serving. It seems like such a taboo to serve papers while your spouse is deployed—is that true? And why did you choose to have Laura, the ultimate good wife, respond this way?

Laura sending Trent divorce papers while deployed I think is the ultimate prohibition. It’s just wrong on so many levels, and yet I wanted to give readers a sense of what could drive someone to their breaking point. Laura is such a strong woman and yet she broke. The strongest of us all have our breaking points. I wanted to show people how hard the war has been on everyone—not just the soldiers deploying but on the kids, on the spouses—but I also wanted to give people hope, too.

7. Agent Chaos and Fluffy, the family hamsters, almost steal the show with their disappearing acts and they add the perfect amount of cuteness and comic relief. What inspired you to add them into the story?

Ah Fluffy and Agent Chaos. So for readers who don’t know, we have hamsters. It all started when we volunteered to buy the pre-k class pet. I didn’t realize that this would include home visits for the holidays. Fluffy was the first hamster and she promptly escaped within the first 24 hours. After that, we’ve become a multiple hamster household and well, when they escape, it’s madness because we have dogs and cats who, by some miracle, haven’t actually ever managed to capture one of the little buggers.

This story badly needed something to lighten it up. I thought adding in some escaping rodents would be the perfect thing to break up a really tough interaction between Trent and his kids. They provided a bridge for him to cross, a way to reach them while he was still getting used to them.

8. Big wedding or small? Hamsters or dogs? Sweats or lingerie?

Small wedding. Both hamsters and dogs and cats. Sweats all the way.

9. Emma and Ethan, Trent and Laura’s kids, are adorable and watching Trent learn how to be a dad again is an amazing thing. How do you think
Trent got so detached from his family?

Coming home to be a parent again is probably the hardest thing soldiers do. The kids have changed, they have their own wants and needs and, well, they’re not your soldiers. They don’t listen like your soldiers have to. The noise and the chaos and the constant needs are really tough to get used to again, so I think Trent just ran away because it was too much to deal with.

10. Since this is such an emotionally charged story, was it difficult for you to write? Or did it come easily?

It was very, very difficult to write. I wanted to push boundaries and create at least a glimpse of what it’s like to come home. I wanted to give readers a taste of the emotions that people go through, the fear, the uncertainty but also the love and the hope and the relief that their loved one
is home safe.

11. Since you’ve been in Trent’s shoes, what is the hardest thing about readjusting to civilian life after a deployment?

The crowds and the entitlement. To this day, I won’t go into crowded stores or wait in crowds. It’s suffocating. And it’s funny because when I first
came home, I was so annoyed at people complaining about lines and traffic and school starting. I was just so grateful to be back. Now, I’m much more sympathetic to everyday gripes and groans. I think it’s just part of how we get through our days.

PEPPER & MICHELLE’S JOINT REVIEW

Mid Life Love – At Last is the sequel to Mid Life Love. Do not read if you have not read book 1. And if you have not read book 1, why not?? It’s amazing. Read our review of MID LIFE LOVE - HERE and then buy it and buy this one.

PEPPER: Ok, so Mid Life Love - At Last
SO
GOOD
I have to say I was worried a little about this book. And not because I didn’t have a total boner over the 1st one, but because I wasn’t sure how it was going to be as good without the angst of them getting together.
You know?
But holy shit!
I couldn’t put it down.

MICHELLE: I. KNOW. In a sea of mediocre books that I had to read over the last few days, Mid Life Love At Last or MLLAL, was a beacon of hope and light. Seriously, I had a lady boner the entire time.

PEPPER: It’s like how MCarey is in this gif

MICHELLE: Yes. It was that fabulous.

I mean honestly- as much as I loved Jonathan and always want more of him, I was sort of worried about this book. Things were good for them at the end of book 1. Why rock the boat? I wasn’t sure I wanted to deal with more angst.

But Whitney G. Williams proved she is a goddess and made it totally amazing and wonderful and perfect. (P.S. We need to get her a nickname STAT.)

PEPPER: She was previously given WGW as a nickname, but I like WhitG…

MICHELLE: WhitG!!

PEPPER: Perf.

So back to the book…
I can’t say enough good things. I want to go back and read it again.
and OH
MY.
GOD.
the next book???
WhitG - can you get on that tomorrow or yesterday please??

MICHELLE: OMG THE NEXT BOOK. GIVE IT TO ME RIGHT NOW.

PEPPER: NOW!

MICHELLE: Seriously WhitG. You turn us into insane people. Like we aren’t even focused. Pepper- focus.
MLLAL.

PEPPER: Sorry.
Focused.

MICHELLE: So let’s talk about the one thing we knew we could really count on.
Amazing sex.

PEPPER: Yes

MICHELLE: Like. I can’t even. The sex is just so good in this book.

PEPPER:

Beyond.

MICHELLE: Jonathan makes public sex seem like the most normal thing to do ever. And I want to do it with him.

PEPPER: I was wondering how she was going to top the sex in MLL - but um the catering table??

MICHELLE: I know.

PEPPER: I know, he’s just like, you have given me no choice Claire. And bam. Sex. Very public sex.
HOT!

MICHELLE: I feel like I don’t ask for much. But can I just have a man who demands to have sex with me a million times a day, pretty much anywhere. Like. Anywhere.

PEPPER: It’s so crazy though, cause you are like, OMG, like this would never happen in real life. But you don’t even care. I can’t believe how good WhitG is at making us think this happens all the time.

MICHELLE: I know. WhitG- you either have the best sex life ever and I hate you so so much but want to be you or you are just really creative. Like why would Claire ever wear underwear? Ever?

PEPPER: She likes to get it ripped off…
OK, so the sex is hot.
And it made me wasn’t to do this.

Or this:

But anyways…
I also want to talk about how I want Claire and Jonathan as best friends in my real life.
They make everything so easy.
I love them.

MICHELLE: I mean I do love them as a couple. They are seriously one of my favorite couples ever. But I wouldn’t say they make everything easy. These two know drama. In book 1 it was all Claire’s fault and she made me mad. But in book 2 when everything gets all cray because of her douche ex-husband (who we will talk about in a sec.) it was like Jonathan lost his ever loving mind.

PEPPER: Ok, yes you are right about the easy comment. I guess I just meant, when they are together, they like silence and I think that is easy.

MICHELLE: Yes! As a couple- when they are working as a couple- they are the best. And I love them.

PEPPER: But they are definitely fireballs as well. They argue and flirt and communicate like best friends and I just love their relationship.
P.S. I loved it when Jonathan lost his mind. Like could he get more amazing? I mean he was being a dick, but he was heartbroken and that was sweet in a way.

MICHELLE: Exactly. I was mad that he was a dick but it showed how much he loves Claire.

And don’t worry readers, we aren’t giving away major details here- you knew there had to be angst or else this book would have no point. So speaking of angst- we knew that Claire’s ex and bitch ass ex-best friend were going to reappear. And WhitG warned me after our review of MLL that I would HATE him so damn much. And she was so right.

PEPPER: ASSHOLES!

MICHELLE: Now this we cannot spoil for you but here is what I will say.

1) He is the biggest douchebag to ever douche in the history of douches. 2) She is a moron and I have nothing good to say about her. 3) Claire handled them both like a motherhuggin boss.

PEPPER: YES!! All of it. I have to say, I was worried the entire book about how Claire was going to react. But she did not disappoint. She was awesome.

MICHELLE: I know. I felt the same way. She was so unsure of herself sometimes in book 1 but in MLLAL she is confident and she knows she has a good man and she doesn’t give a shit about anything.

PEPPER: I want to make out with her. She kicked ass in this book. Such a positive turn for her.
And Jonathan.
Could he get more perfect?
This is me in regard to all things Jonathan Carter Statham:

Like, I just can’t - I’m done…

MICHELLE: I know. He is top book boyfriend material. My 1 and 2 spots are reserved but I think he is #3 for me.

Seriously- we cannot say enough good stuff about this book. Everything about it is perfect- the characters, secondary characters, plot, sex, angst. All of it. WhitG- you rock.

Ok- so before we officially leave you so you can start reading here is a little tip for you. When you are done with this book and have fallen in love with it as we did, head to WhitG’s blog for some awesome extras including a scene from after MLLAL ends!

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1) Jonathan is one of the hottest book boyfriends ever. Like seriously top 5. Who or what inspired you to write this character?

Well, I LOVE alpha heroes-The Christian Grey, Gideon Cross, Jesse Ward, & Damien Stark types BUT I have a really soft spot for the beta heroes (the nice guys who just want to shower you with affection and are naturally romantic) so i wanted to make him a good mix of the two. Don’t get me wrong, I love the “cray cray” that the alpha heroes bring, but I wanted to make Jonathan different.

2) Let’s talk about sex. Claire and Jonathan have some of the hottest sex. Ever. And so much of it is in public. Please share with us how you created some of those scenes and PLEASE tell us they came from real life inspiration.

Honestly? I told myself that this time, for this book, there are no rules or formulas I have to follow so “whenever” sex was possible….It was going to happen: Room full of coworkers? Sure! Why not? In the restaurant at the bathroom? Eff it, let’s do it! LOL Unfortunately, none of these came from real life experience…my mind is just that dirty sometimes *hangs head in shame*

3) One thing we loved were the ridiculous marketing ideas and the whole new age, touchy feeling office vibe. It was all hilarious and details like that really made this book stand out. How did you come up with that stuff and will we see more of it n At Last?

Thank you! :-) Well, this actually did come from real-life experience-I’m one of the muses for Claire’s rants about clueless employees with crazy ideas-Yeah, I’m admitting that…LOL. Ummm, At Last is a bit different since it’s a continuation story-We’re going to have asides from Jonathan as opposed to Claire.

4) So we see in the synopsis that her douche of an ex is back. Without giving anything away- can you give us a hint as to why the hell he’s anywhere near Claire?

You know, Ryan really is a nice guy and he’s always loved Claire, and I think readers will sympathize-Okay scratch that-he’s terrible. I don’t think I can hint at anything without giving it away! I can email you spoilers though!

5) Do you have any actors in mind for casting of the two main characters?

Originally I casted Angelina Jolie as Claire and Matt Bomer as Jonathan, but I’m starting to lean towards Sandra Bullock and Josh Kloss…

6) Was there any music that inspired you while writing?

Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 Experience. On repeat.

7) And finally, what can we look forward to seeing from you in the future?

BOOK #1 - MID LIFE LOVE

If you’d asked me what love was two years ago, I probably would’ve said, ‘It’s this amazing feeling that obsesses and possesses you; it’s what me and my husband currently have.’ If you ask me that same question today, I’ll say, ‘Please get the hell out of my face.’

Claire Gracen’s life is picture perfect. Her career as a marketing director is on the brink of being legendary, and her marriage to her high school sweetheart has never been stronger. No, wait. It has. It used to be amazing and fulfilling, but one day Claire realizes that she’s been living a lie and her best friend and husband have committed the ultimate betrayal.

Broken and depressed, Claire is in need of something new—new city, new job, new friends.

When she happens to attract the interest of the sexiest man she’s ever met, a man significantly younger than her, she immediately turns him down—only to later discover that this man is Jonathan Statham, self-made billionaire and CEO of Statham Industries. Her boss.

Jonathan Statham is unlike any man she’s met before. He’s used to getting whatever he wants—whenever he wants, and he isn’t about to take no for an answer.

Sexy, unpredictable, and charmingly clever, Mid Life Love is a story that will captivate you, entertain you, and force you to fall deeply in love with the characters.
