PLAYING WITH TROUBLE by Chanel Cleeton: Book Review

The author of Flirting with Scandal presents her second book in a sexy contemporary romance series about three sisters in a powerful political family, the scandals that threaten to destroy them, and the passion that drives them…

The daughter of one of the Senate’s most powerful figures, Blair Reynolds was ready to become the ultimate political wife—until she caught her fiancé cheating on her wedding day. Law school is a fresh start, her shot at putting the pieces of her life back together. That’s the plan, at least. Until trouble comes in the form of her Torts professor, the man whose arrogance infuriates her in class but haunts her private fantasies.

Graydon Canter had a fortune and a place on all the hottest “Thirty under Thirty” lists, until a series of personal missteps nearly destroyed his career. A year teaching at a D.C. law school is just the break he needs to get his life back in order, as long as nothing—and no one—trips him up.

When Blair and Gray are forced to work together, their explosive attraction becomes impossible to resist. But Gray’s demons have drawn him dangerously close to the edge, and Blair has spent her life playing by the rules. Will she break them for a shot at love?

MICHELLE’S REVIEW

So I think we can all agree that when a book is set in our hometown- we get excited. Any time DC serves as the location for one of the books I read, I am instantly drawn to it.

So when I read the first in the Capital Confessions series by Chanel Cleeton- FLIRTING WITH SCANDAL- I was really hoping it would meet expectations and I would have a new series to love. And it did and I do! You can read my review of book 1 HERE.

When I received a copy of PLAYING FOR TROUBLE for review, I was really excited. We meet our heroine, Blair, in the first book. In the event that you haven’t read the book, I won’t spoil anything but Blair goes through a lot when we meet her and it isn’t even her story. Secrets about her powerful father, a US Senator, are revealed and she is thrust into that scandal. Not to mention she has a scandal of her own when she finds out her fiancee likes the peen.

Yup. My nightmare is Blair’s reality. Seriously- I think I am going to end up with a gay man. But I digress.

Blair has started law school. Not because she wants to but because she’s sort of floundering in life and couldn’t think of what else to do. Law school would be fine but she’s got no passion for it and it’s tough for her.

It doesn’t help that the new professor is hot as fire and a total ass. Graydon “Gray” Candor is hot hot hot. All bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks who made it but couldn’t handle it and made a lot of bad decisions.

Of course he picks on Blair. He picks on her so he can hear her voice and stare at her because he is SMITTEN.

When they get forced to work together on a pro-bono project, they can’t hide their attraction and it doesn’t take long for things to heat up. It actually took them a while to do the nasty, which I liked, but they were connecting almost immediately. They were drawn to each other in a way that was borderline instalove but it worked on them.

But dating a teacher is still a scandal so it takes them a while to come around to it. especially Gray who thinks he would be dragging her down. All the while- the gossip rag Capital Confessions can’t seem to leave Blair alone and somehow they know there is a man in her life.

When you find out who the source of the gossip column entries are, you’re head will EXPLODE.

In the midst of navigating a new romance, Blair has to contend with what she wants to do with her life, getting out from under her parents, trying to make everyone but herself happy and being a good sister. Especially to Kate.

Now let me take a moment and tell you how freaking excited I am about Kate’s book. We learn more about her in this book and there is a preview for her story at the end and I CAN NOT WAIT.

In many ways, this is as much a coming of age story for Blair as it is a love story for Blair and Gray. It’s sweet and sexy without being too much. I would have loved just a little bit MORE. Maybe a tiny bit more drama before things become good, more about Gray’s past in detail rather than in him just telling us about it. But overall, I really liked the storyline, I enjoy Chanel’s writing and I love these characters. Can’t wait for more.

Originally a Florida girl, CHANEL CLEETON moved to London where she received a bachelor’s degree from Richmond, The American International University in London and a master’s degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Chanel fell in love with London and planned to stay there forever, until fate intervened on a Caribbean cruise and a fighter pilot with smooth dance moves swept her off her feet. Now, a happily ever after later, Chanel is living her next adventure.

Law school made Chanel realize she’d rather spend her days writing sexy stories than in a courtroom, and she hasn’t looked back since. An avid reader and hopeless romantic, she’s happiest curled up with a book. She has a weakness for handbags, her three pups, and her husband.

Chanel writes contemporary romances. She is published by Harlequin HQN, Penguin/InterMix, and Penguin/Berkley and is the author of the International School, Capital Confessions, and Wild Aces series.
