So I have to admit- I am new to Claire Contreras. I mean- I don’t live under a rock. I’ve heard of her. I even have swag from her that I got at an NYC signing like 2 years ago. But it was one of those things where I bought her first book and then time and other books kept interjecting and I could never find the time to read it. Well no more…
I will make time for Claire. Because she has very quickly and swiftly earned a spot in the top authors for Michelle. I read KALEIDOSCOPE HEARTS last week in preparation for the tour of PAPER HEARTS. I was straight up blown away. I sat there thinking- what the hell was I thinking not reading this woman’s books sooner???? Her writing- phenomenal. Her characters- Everything you could ask for. Her story line- creative without being too over the top. Basically I have finally arrived…
So both KALEIDOSCOPE HEARTS and now PAPER HEARTS are second chance romances. Which are some of my favorites. I have no idea why since I would prefer that all of my ex boyfriends would fall into a pit of cobras. But I guess the fact that a second chance romance isn’t in the cards for me makes it all that more attractive in the fiction I read.
If you have not read KALEIDOSCOPE HEARTS- do that first. It really sets the tone for this story and more importantly- it introduces you to the gang. I didn’t notice it until I started reading- but Claire doesn’t give you much of Jensen and only a little of Mia- and who they are as people- in KALEIDOSCOPE HEARTS. Which makes it perfect going into TORN HEARTS (the prequel) and finally PAPER HEARTS. Because all of the pain, the heartache and the path that these two embark on - is fresh.
Jensen is swoon worthy. There is no doubt about it. The man has a chance to get his first and really only true love back and he will stop at nothing. It’s beautiful to see. But for me, Claire did such a good job of making me feel Mia’s pain that I found myself having all the same reservations that she did. I could almost picture myself in her shoes- battling with wanting something and not knowing if it would come back and bite you in the ass again.
What I loved about Paper Hearts the most (because there are many things) was the character development and the writing. There were moments where I didn’t feel like I was reading a book- I felt like I was sitting on a bench in Central Park watching a romance play out in front of my eyes.
While this story focuses on Mia and Jensen, there are other characters that play an integral part. Some of them you know from KALEIDOSCOPE HEARTS and some of them will be new. One of them will probably steal your heart a little.
I could probably go on for days about this book. Really. It’s so damn beautiful and emotional and it’s just everything you want in a romance. Do not hesitate to pick this one up. And the best part- the prequel novella TORN HEARTS is included in the beginning of PAPER HEARTS so it’s like getting a free novella!
